Supporting Families Affected by Wars and Conflicts: Experiences of NGOs in Qatar

Time: Feb 02, 2018
Location: United Nations Headquarters, NY, USA

The Doha International Family Institute (DIFI), a member of Qatar Foundation, recently held a panel discussion on ‘Supporting Families Affected by Wars and Conflicts: Experiences of NGOs in Qatar’, at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York.

The event, which took place on Friday, February 2, was organized in collaboration with Qatar Red Crescent Society, Qatar Charity, Education Above All, and the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the UN.

Evidence shows that the cumulative impact of wars and violent conflict aggravates economies and weakens the ability of the state, local authorities, or private sectors in providing services and opportunities of livelihood for families and their members. The DIFI event shed light on the critical role of non-governmental organizations in providing the necessary support and assistance to families and their members affected by wars and conflicts. The discussion sought to highlight and present the experiences of NGOs in Qatar in providing support to populations affected by wars and conflicts.

The event began with opening remarks from H.E. Sheikha Alya Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, followed by introductory remarks from Ms. Noor Al Malki Al-Jehani Executive Director, DIFI. The panel discussed the humanitarian aid and poverty alleviation from the experience and insights of QRCS, represented by Dr. Mohammed Bin Ghanim Al Ali Al-Maadheed, Chairman of the Board; and Qatar Charity, represented by Mr. Mohammed bin Ali Al-Ghamdi, Executive Director. The panel also highlighted the experience and insights of Education Above All, represented by Ms. Salwa Al Mannai, Head of Policy and Research, in providing education to war affected children.

DIFI is a global policy and advocacy Institute working to advance knowledge on Arab families, through research, and promote evidence-based polices at the national, regional, and international levels. The institute has special consultative status with United Nations Economic and Social Council.
