Quality over Quantity – How Parental Decisions are Impacting Fertility

DIFI HOSTS SIDE-EVENT AT THE UNITED NATIONS COMMISSION ON POPULATION AND DEVELOPMENT ON HOW PARENTAL DECISIONS ARE IMPACTING FERTILITY

QF member discusses how parenting decisions are impacting the global fertility decline with the aim of identifying policy measures and best practices available worldwide

 

Under the priority theme of ‘population and sustainable development, in particular sustained and inclusive economic growth’, the Doha International Family Institute (DIFI), a member of Qatar Foundation, organized a virtual side event on 26 April 2022 during the United Nations 55th Session of the Commission on Population and Development, titled “Quality over Quantity – How Parental Decisions are Impacting Fertility” in partnership with the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar and the United Nations Population Fund – Regional Office of Arab States (UNFPA).

Building on a DIFI study on the “social aspects of fertility in Qatar,” the side-event discussed the impact of quality of life and quality parenting on declining fertility rates and identified the best policy measures and best practices available worldwide as lessons learned.

 

Welcoming remarks during the side-event were provided by Mr.Jassim Sayar Al Maawada ,first Security ,Deputy permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations. shared that “We are proud of the work of the Doha International Institute (DIFI) as through its consultative status with ECOSOC, has been keen to share their work and research with the international community, also through the cooperation with UNFPA especially on their cooperative efforts aiming at understanding the connection between parental decisions and fertility.”

 

Engaging discussions were provided by the speakers: Professor George Leeson, Professorial Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, Dr. Luay Shabaneh, Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund / Arab States, and Dr. Sharifa Al Emadi, Executive Director of the Doha International Family Institute. The panel was moderated by Ms. Sultana Afdhal, Chief Executive Officer of the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH).
